Fifth of July The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through July 11 2009

The beauty of Lanford Wilson's 31-year-old play, about a group of 1960s activists coping with adulthood in the mellower '70s, is that Wilson never lets its once-trendy, now well-explored issues--Vietnam, drug use, committed gay relationships, aging-baby-boomer angst--distract him from his deeper work: the creation of fascinating, fully fleshed-out characters. Director Michael Weber has done a great job of building on Wilson's strengths, packing this production with fine actors who know how to plumb the script's depths. Danny Bernardo and Rebekah Ward-Hays are particularly good at this, playing a main character's patient, long-suffering lover and a druggy demi-celebrity who learns to stand up for herself. --Jack Helbig
