Fighting Mad

An overlooked B-picture of genuine merit (1976), directed by Jonathan Demme (Melvin and Howard). Coming at the end of the revenge cycle inspired by Walking Tall, its considerable qualities were swamped by generic backlash. Gentler, more honestly felt, and made with much more craft than most of the other entries in the genre, Fighting Mad courts an effective ecological lyricism in its story of a returning farm boy (Peter Fonda) who finds that his ancestral home is being threatened by a gigantic real estate development. Demme has since become a major filmmaker, but this was his first sign of real talent.
