Films by Krzysztof Wierzbicki, program one

Four short works by the Polish documentarian, to be shown by video projection as part of Taste of the Polish Film Festival. The Third Fair One (1984, 17 min.), to be shown without subtitles, records a day in Warsaw's criminal court after the imposition of martial law in the 80s. In The True Story of the Warthog (1996, 24 min.) the title animal escapes from a Warsaw zoo and becomes a symbol of freedom to Poles. The Businessman and the Beggar (1997, 28 min.), to be shown without subtitles, profiles two men in their 50s whose differing fortunes conceal many similarities. Cryptonym “Yankee” (1999, 27 min.) tells the story of Janusz Majewski, the son of a Polish woman and a black American soldier, who went to jail for his involvement with Solidarity and later emigrated from Poland to the U.S., but still feels unsure of his cultural identity.
