Finding Amanda

A burned-out TV writer (Matthew Broderick), hoping to redeem himself in the eyes of his fed-up wife (Maura Tierney), takes off for Las Vegas to rescue their young niece (Brittany Snow) from a life of prostitution. Writer-director Peter Tolan is a veteran Hollywood quip meister whose resumé ranges from above-average series (Murphy Brown, The Larry Sanders Show) to abysmal features (Guess Who, Just Like Heaven). His feature directing debut, this presumably personal effort offers a steady supply of clever lines but suffers from the patina of self-loathing common to industry lifers and the unfortunate miscasting of straight-arrow Broderick as a depressed, cynical hack. With Steve Coogan. R, 90 min.
