In 1944, a young poet named Hannah Senesh returned from the relative safety of Israel to German-occupied Hungary in an attempt to rescue some of her fellow Jews. She was captured and executed by a Nazi firing squad. She was 23 years old. The exhibition Fire in My Heart: The Story of Hannah Senesh —which opens today and runs through September 8—tells the story of her brief but remarkable life.
