An early effort by director Philippe de Broca (That Man From Rio, King of Hearts), this 1961 comedy stars Jean Seberg as a Paris housewife who enters into a love affair with a bohemian layabout whom she believes to be a wealthy bon vivant. The film is very French in its nonchalant approach to adultery and how the heroine devotes so much time to negotiating the terms of the relationship; the affair must proceed according to her ever-growing list of demands or not at all. The charming 23-year-old star adds a freshness to the creaky farcical complications. Her most attractive costar might be Paris itself, gorgeously rendered by Jean Penzer's sparkling black-and-white cinematography. In French with subtitles.
