Flow The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 23 2011

Will Power's word-drunk 2003 solo piece about theater, hip-hop, and the place of storytelling in our culture has been revived here as a two-person show, directed with energy and verve by Sonita Surratt. Rashaad Hall and Deja Taylor throw their all into bringing Power's myriad characters to life, and much of what works works because they're such a delight to watch. Hall is particularly adept at chameleon transformations. The material, however, is very uneven. Sections of dazzling poetry and insight alternate with scenes that are flat-footed, shallow, or worse. Power spends way too much time proving his street cred, packing his script with sly references to once-hot, now-not hip-hop disputes like the one over who's better, Nas or Jay-Z. --Jack Helbig
