In this adaptation of an Arthur Miller novel, a Brooklyn office worker in the 1940s (William H. Macy) falls victim to the anti-Semitism he's helped institutionalize. At first the character seems too pathetic—and the production design too stylized—for the story to go beyond that obvious irony, but this insidiously complex satire is filled with apparent digressions, and our complete identification with Macy occurs so gradually that it's impossible to pinpoint just when our previous disdain becomes a position of relative comfort. Neal Slavin directed a screenplay by Kendrew Lascelles; with Laura Dern, David Paymer, and Meat Loaf Aday.
