For Frankie: David Morales, Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, Derrick Carter, Michael Serafini, and Garrett David Agenda Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Sun., Jan. 18, 10 p.m. 2015

Great Frankie Knuckles tributes flooded the Internet after “the Godfather of House Music” died last year, but the piece Smart Bar talent buyer Marea Stamper wrote for Thump still stood out because it so clearly came right from the gut. Rather than reiterate Frankie’s well-documented influence and accomplishments in the industry, Stamper (aka producer the Black Madonna) focuses on his role as the beating heart of an evolving culture and community, a man whose friendship and personality were inextricable from his work in the scene (particularly at Smart Bar, where he was a constant presence since performing at the club’s opening weekend in 1982). Frankie would’ve turned 60 on Sunday, and to celebrate his life Stamper is throwing a killer bash that features house-music heavy hitters such as Grammy winner David Morales and legendary Chicagoan Derrick Carter. The bash is part of Smart Bar Relights the Night, a series of parties celebrating a club renovation that’s set to wrap up by the middle of January. So not only will the DJs bring it for Frankie, but I bet the four on the floor will sound like heaven. —Leor Galil Partygoers and performers include David Morales, Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, Derrick Carter, Michael Serafini, and Garrett David.
