Forbidden Broadway Dances With the Stars The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 2 2008

Forbidden Broadway is still big--it's the shows that got small. Larded with movie-to-stage transplants and jukebox musicals, the Great White Way's not-so-great current offerings land in the crosshairs of Gerard Alessandrini's latest spoof--directed by Alessandrini and William Selby, and featuring a breathtakingly gifted quartet of performers. The show's send-up of Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein captures the malaise with pitch-perfect cynicism in "Puttin' Up With Shit," while the Jersey Boys number sardonically notes that clunky narration has supplanted the book. Old favorites also get some affectionate ribbing, especially in Mark David Kaplan's sidesplitting "tribute" to the many faces of Mandy Patinkin. Even those who are not fans of musicals can appreciate this acerbic deconstruction of Broadway's devolution into a soulless theme park. --Kerry Reid
