Concert events at the Bohemian National Cemetery are always special, and I hope they continue to be carefully curated to maintain their almost spiritual event status. The Beyond the Gate series continues the tradition with the first Chicago appearance of Fountainsun, the duo of musician-artist-photographer Fumie Ishii and Daniel Higgs, whom you might remember from Lungfish as well as a long career of eerie, elaborate, haunting occult folk. A work of ritualistic, meditative plainsong, their forthcoming debut, Music Today (Gnome Life), has been four years in the making and couldn’t have been rushed. The pair have honed their style these past few months in a sort of tour of unconventional and small venues—the atmosphere specific to each site helps shape their live performance of the songs. Beyond the Gate regulars and kindred spirits Wrekmeister Harmonies anchor the lineup with their now-familiar and beloved local presence. —Monica Kendrick
