I don't know which is worse, John Patrick Shanley's insufferable play about the endlessly manipulative assholes who inhabit the film industry, or Dan LaMorte's uninspired production of it. But clearly these two were made for each other.

I mean, who better to direct yet another play by yet another bitter playwright-turned-screenwriter about how awful Hollywood is than a guy who thinks it's clever to play "Hooray for Hollywood" and "There's No Business Like Show Business" between scenes? Who better to guarantee that Shanley's lifeless dialogue won't accidentally spring to life than a guy who has Lisa Dodson play the fading star as if she were Norma Desmond?

You know the plot: the movie's a dog, the producer's a snake, the star's a pig, the starlet's a bitch, the director's a worm, the writer's a weasel--and the audience was so bored we hoped one of Wisdom Bridge's trademark blue-haired subscribers would take out some hard candy and divert us with some major cellophane crinkling.
