Fracture/Mechanics The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 27 2009

Mallery Avidon's promising, intermittently captivating play ultimately betrays itself. The intriguing first 75 minutes--21 brief scenes between a twentysomething woman and the dozen or so men she's slept with--focus on tense, playful, or turbulent moments of precoital negotiation. The best scenes artfully illustrate the myriad ways in which mismatched objectives, expectations, and fantasies both thwart and enhance intimate connections (although anyone with a shred of feminist conscience will recoil at Avidon's presumption that a sexually active woman who can't form a lasting romantic bond must be emotionally fractured). But having found compelling truths in Avidon's messy complications, director David Perez's able cast gets stuck with a simplistic Hallmark finale that wipes them all away. --Justin Hayford
