Though Franconello's is what some might call unfashionably far from downtown, it's less than half an hour from the Loop by car, it's easy to find, and the valet parking is free. This place offers really good food for the price, but is almost done in by poor service. Split pea soup was just the right consistency, with a slightly smoky flavor. The minestrone was equally good. The pork chop was one of the largest I've ever eaten, smothered in garlic and herbs, a bit dry but served with a very tasty jus. Unfortunately, our server took our drink orders and then returned ten minutes later without drinks or an explanation. She only told us about the specials when asked if they had any, and she didn't seem to know anything about them. She described the gelato as "sort of like ice cream but not as creamy." That was a real shame, because if the burnt caramel gelato was less creamy than their ice cream, their ice cream must be the richest on earth. Franconello's menu provides no surprises or innovations, but it offers great value and a lot of rustic flavor. Fix the service and it would be a real contender.
