Frank Leone self-released Enter Wild back in March, and though this show is a belated celebration of the young rapper’s debut full-length, it’s also a reminder that the project is more than good enough to outlast today’s hyperfast release cycle. Leone drew inspiration from the wooded plots of his downstate hometown of Monticello, the theatrical drama of Les Miserables, and the claustrophobic aggression of Tyler, the Creator while making Enter Wild. It’s the latest in a string of local hip-hop mixtapes made with the expertise one would expect from a studio album. Leone describes it as an “action adventure,” and he’s built in an immersive quality that binds the tracks together—though some songs stand out above the rest. The hazy didgeridoo thump of “Monsters” and the percussive snaps on “War,” which Leone recorded with the Fighting Illini drum line, thrive outside the context of Enter Wild as well as within it. —Leor Galil
