Hubris Productions delivers a splendid rendition of Terrence McNally's superb 1987 comedy about a diner waitress and a short-order cook on their first date. Set in a dumpy Hell's Kitchen apartment, the play begins with the couple wrapping up a marathon bout of lovemaking. Then the real wooing begins. Frankie, the waitress, is a feisty, defensive cynic who bears the psychic and physical scars of a troubled childhood and an abusive prior affair; Johnny is pushy, needy, and determined to turn this one-night stand into a long-term relationship despite Frankie's resistance. Under Jacob Christopher Green's direction, actors Patricia Savieo and Dennis Frymire skillfully negotiate the emotional ebb and flow of this wonderfully written, gritty, yet unabashedly romantic play. --Albert Williams
