Frat Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Nov. 12 2011

The original press materials on Evan Linder's play said that he based it on his own experiences as "a brother of one of the oldest fraternities in the south," and promised that it would immerse us "in the secret world" of Greek life. So there's an element of the expose here. But you'll only be disappointed if you see this remounting of the New Colony's 2009 hit on that account. Any secrets divulged in the course of following four pledges through "hell week" are banal, and an initiation scene comes across as sweetly, childishly silly rather than shocking. Instead, see Frat for (a) a robust environmental staging; (b) an insight into the group-think, psychological cruelty, and desperate need to belong that make frat life possible; and (c) the beer, of course, available from a bar in the performance area. --Tony Adler
