You can tell a lot about someone by the company he keeps--or in the case of this concert, by those willing to come to his assistance. Saxophonist Henry Huff (aka Light) was a potent and energizing force in the original version of the acclaimed Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, and since then he's found other avenues for the spirituality he brought to those performances such as studying holistic healing and conducting Sunday lakeside concerts at dawn. Now Light has some looming medical expenses, so members of the south-side jazz community are rallying (within days of Frank Capra's death, yet!) with a series of fortnightly benefit concerts that starts tonight. Among those scheduled to appear are tenor saxist Fred Anderson, one of the most lyrically powerful exponents of postbop expressionism; his sidekick of a quarter century, trumpeter Billy Brimfield (who, based on his jam-session appearance during the jazz festival, is playing as well as ever and better than almost anyone else in town); and the explosive drummer Ajaramu, who joins Anderson in clarifying the linkage between the musics of Charlie Parker and the A.A.C.M. Several others are expected to drop by, and Light himself will be on hand for part of the evening; he won't be able to play his horn, but basking is not out of the question. Tonight, 8 PM, Southend Musicworks, 1313 S. Wabash; 939-2848.
