Frederick The Short List (Theater) Recommended Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 23 2014

Falling leaves and a chill in the air spell trouble for a mischief of field mice in Leo Lionni's acclaimed children's book, here a musical adapted by Suzanne Miller for Chicago Children's Theatre and directed by Stuart Carden. While his family frets and scurries to gather rations for the winter, young Frederick, a poet, soaks up sun and collects words. The enchanting practical effects, original blues and folk songs by Sarah Durkee and Paul Jacobs, and a uniformly musical and animated six-person cast do right by the source material, but the show also adds something subtle and remarkable, establishing a tranquil sense of the inevitability of change in a way young audiences can understand. Even on the most blustery Chicago fall nights, it's impossible to leave without feeling a little warmer. —Dan Jakes
