West Town Bikes

2418 W. North

312-213-4184 or westtownbikes.org

The mission of West Town Bikes is simple: to provide a place where people can learn how to fix and maintain their own bicycles. This nonprofit group offers a variety of classes that require registration (wheel building, urbanizing a bike), but every Tuesday from 7 to 10 PM it hosts an open workshop where participants can pick up tips and tricks from other riders as well as the on-site instructor. (A ladies-only version is held during the same hours the first and third Wednesday of every month.) Tools and bike stands are provided, and some small parts, like cables and bearings, are available for purchase. Donations, monetary or otherwise, are happily accepted.
