A lonely police detective (Jim Caviezel) whose father has been dead for 30 years gets on a ham radio and makes a new friend: his dad (Dennis Quaid). This very good SF drama uses coffee-table physics to make parallel universes the logical basis of an intricate subplot in which father and son team up across time to pursue a serial killer. Things get somewhat busy and slightly mawkish at the end, but the solid foundation can withstand it. Quaid's buoyant earnestness complements the stunning, low-key performance by Caviezel, whose close-ups give new meaning to the idea that still waters run deep. Gregory Hoblit directed a screenplay by Toby Emmerich; with Andre Braugher and Elizabeth Mitchell. 118 min.
