Friday Afternoon

An Iranian single mother (Roya Nonahali) finds her love severely tested after her troubled son learns the truth about his parentage and runs away from home in shame. Nonahali has the expressive face of a classic tragedian, but her movements feel natural and unstudied; one of her biggest emotional moments takes place off camera, powered largely by her voice. Director Mona Zandi deftly steers her actors through material that could have been overwrought, using close-ups sparingly and conveying through artful tracks and two-shots the ineluctable bond between parent and child. In Farsi with subtitles. 72 min.
