Friday Night Fudge New Review (Theater and Comedy)

When: Fridays. Continues through Sept. 4 2015

This variety hour-plus has potential, but needs a better lineup ahead of the main act, improv team Fudge. A CIC Theater house team goes first; on the night I attended it was Clockwise, offering up a set based on the suggestion "vault." Laughs were spotty, but plotlines had some fun twists and turns, and Brian Byrne's physical comedy could fill a much larger stage. Next comes a musical act, featuring a different local guest each week—that night Zachariah Spindler, whose overly high amp levels and bland stage presence distracted from his interesting voice. Fudge's hilarious set, based on the suggestion "gynecologist's office," took the cake for delivering the most unexpectedly ridiculous use of a plaster-cast vagina. Tim Lyons was MVP of the evening, donating his unassuming deadpan to both improv teams. —Marissa Oberlander
