From the Mississippi Delta Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Jan. 11 2009

Endesha Ida Mae Holland's 1991 autobiographical play is composed of short vignettes that chronicle her life and times in post-World War II, pre-civil rights Greenwood, Mississippi. Some of those vignettes--especially the heartfelt portraits--are warm and comic, some aren't: Holland includes an unflinching look at her short career in prostitution and a horrifying account of her mother's death at the hands of the KKK. The script moves so quickly from one memory to the next that at times their impact is blunted, and in the end the fragments never quite click together into a unified whole. Still, director Audrey Morgan, and her talented three-person cast kept me enthralled with Holland's extraordinary life. --Jack Helbig

Price: $30, two for one Thu and 7 PM Sun (except closing night)
