When: Sun., Jan. 10, 4 p.m. 2010

As part of the Music Institute of Chicago’s monthlong series “From All Sides: Paving the Way to America’s Cultural Identity,” the Tribune’s Rick Kogan hosts "From the Oregon Trail to Route 66: The Lure of the American West." Bookended by a lecture/discussion about westward expansion and a screening of “Empire Upon the Trails” (episode two of Steven Ives’s eight-part documentary series The West), the program includes a concert featuring “examples of western swing” by Howard Levy and Don Stiernberg as well as performances of Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s The Banjo and Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring.
