Powerlessness, red tape, and hostility from strangers are the lot of the refugee seeking asylum. Swedish playwright Ninna Tersman movingly depicts this predicament from the point of view of two teenagers--we never learn their nations of origin, but the girl's accent is Eastern European and the boy appears Middle Eastern--marooned in an unnamed country's immigration processing center while their parents undergo endless questioning. The kids pass the time by burlesquing the adults in their life--a sorry collection of bored bureaucrats, cloying aid workers, and defeated parents immobilized by despair. Tersman writes with empathy and bite, qualities reflected in Adam Dodds's production, beautifully acted by Olivia Douglas and Riso Straley as the scarred but warily hopeful teens. Part of the Alcyone Festival.--Zac Thompson

Price: $10-$20, festival pass $50
