Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) takes some interesting chances in this messy but engaging comedy, which suggests he may yet mature (no, seriously) into a filmmaker of substance. Adam Sandler punches way above his accustomed weight as an Adam Sandler-esque comedian who's gotten mega-rich making terrible, Adam Sandler-esque movies. Isolated by stardom and diagnosed with advanced leukemia, he hires schlubby, struggling stand-up Seth Rogen as his personal assistant, then enlists the horrified Rogen in a sordid scheme to win back his lost love (Leslie Mann) from her macho but New Agey Australian husband (Eric Bana). At 150 minutes this is too long, but the characters are well-rounded and the dick jokes border on poetry. The best laughs come from Jonah Hill (Superbad) and Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore) as Rogen's seethingly competitive comedian roommates. R.
