Future Rock, Shout Out Out Out Out, Orchard Lounge, Bald Eagle Recommended Soundboard

When: Fri., April 24, 9 p.m. 2009

If I were to describe a band as a mix of Jean Michel Jarre, cowbell funk, Soft Cell, the Doctor Who theme, and a bunch of guys huffing Glade and jamming all night, you’d be perfectly right to imagine a nauseating blob of electro-sludge. But though this dance band from Edmonton, Alberta, sounds pretty terrible on paper (and pretty incoherent on first listen), there’s a method to the madness—the long, looping songs have enough fiercely chipper synth-pop soul to keep you on board till it becomes clear where they’re headed. Two of the guys play trap kits while the other four split time between basses and keyboards, and on Shout Out Out Out Out’s new second full-length, Reintegration Time (Normals Welcome), they mix a bonanza of analog-synth tones—low and smooth, buzzy and twinkly, farty and weird—with spazzed-out live drumming, programmed beats, and vocodered vocals that would sound coolly robotic if the humans providing the lung power weren’t so hyper. It’s like Tom Baker tried to set the Tardis to “shake ass” and got the dial stuck on “pogo.” Future Rock headlines; Shout Out Out Out Out, Orchard Lounge, and Bald Eagle open. —Ann Sterzinger
