You might say that Game Theory is the fruition of the whole "quirky pop" school, except that they've traded that format's dinky-toy irresolution for surging emotionality, rigorous and radical musicianship, and "I Can See for Miles" dynamics. And, by the way, don't insult them by calling it pop. Game Theory plays breathless, eccentric, hysterical music--just the kind we used to call rock 'n' roll, in fact. Sure, the melodies and vocals are of spun sugar and sun-filled air, but they float up out of a thunderstorm. The new single "Chardonnay" is the old pure dream juice in a startling new wineskin, and could be the anthem of the late 80s, were there any balls in radioland. Guiding intelligence Scott Miller has the sensibility of a fencing master, like Tyrone Power in The Mark of Zorro--the attack seems all frills and panache until you notice your sleeve is ripped and feel the blood running down your arm.
