The moody images and Michael Nyman's score aren't enough to salvage this banal 1997 science fiction story about the "very near future," when people are genetically tested and engineered so that all their strengths and weaknesses are known, if not determined, at birth. Ethan Hawke is an inferior specimen who wants so badly to be an astronaut that he masquerades as a viable candidate by assuming the identity of disabled golden boy Jude Law. (Uma Thurman also figures in the plot, if only for aesthetic reasons.) I didn't care enough about Hawke's character to ignore a big problem in the story's logic: if this future has such incredible biotechnology, why can't Law just get his damaged body parts fixed?
