Gays and Porn

To the editor:

In his review of Making Porno [July 21] Justin Hayford states that "porno films play continuously at several local gay bars--almost always eroticizing unsafe sexual practices." Perhaps Hayford and I patronize different venues, but I have rarely, if ever, seen such a porno playing in a Chicago bar.

Hayford asserts that the gay community has not considered the issues of objectification and fetishization surrounding pornography. The justification for this bit of conjecture seems to be the fact that porn is enjoyed openly in gay institutions such as the bars and the gay press. But an antiporn position is not the inevitable result of thinking about such material. That the gay community has arrived at different conclusions than certain theorists does not mean, as Hayford implies, that these conclusions were reached in ignorance. Perhaps it is the gay community rather than the antiporn movement which better understands the "often troubling reality of pornography in American culture."
