George Stevens: A Filmmaker's Journey

Stevens is the classic case of the able American filmmaker (Gunga Din, The More the Merrier) who caught a bad case of art ( Shane, A Place in the Sun) and allowed his real talents to slip away. Naturally, this documentary tribute assembled by Stevens's son, George Jr., takes the opposite position, proclaiming the ascendancy of Stevens's accomplishments even as the progressive film clips display how far he had fallen in the last half of his career. Katharine Hepburn, Frank Capra, Hermes Pan, Joel McCrea, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and Fred Zinnemann are among the celebrities who share their reminiscences of Stevens, though the film's most interesting aspect is the color home-movie footage Stevens took on the sets of his films and during his World War II service with the army signal corps.
