Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns)

This fannish but intelligent chronicle of indie pop band They Might Be Giants violates every convention of the rock documentary: in lieu of drugs, sleaze, and warring egos, it explores a stable, highly productive partnership between two decent, articulate coffee drinkers, accordionist John Linnell and guitarist John Flansburgh, who've made some of the best pop music of the last 20 years. Director A.J. Schnack might have cut back on the hosannas from celebrities (Janeane Garofolo, Harry Shearer, Conan O'Brien, among others) in favor of more face time with the band's music business allies, but otherwise he exhibits a sure narrative hand; witty flourishes like his parody of Ken Burns are icing on the cake. 102 min.
