Gimme Change Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 8 2010

Performing three short plays about homelessness in an hour may sound like an exercise in superficiality, but 3eyed Monster's showcase of original work provides abundant food for thought. Conor Woods's Curb'd, about three college students faking homelessness for a class project, irreverently skewers the notion that doing something is necessarily better than doing nothing. Joe Kwaczala's swirling stream-of-consciousness solo piece, Standpoint, giddily explores the myriad ways in which knee-jerk responses to the homeless reduce human beings to an exploitable issue. Only Playing House--Megan O'Donoghue's expressionistic piece centered on two homeless children who morph into grotesque stereotypes of junkie bum and rich bitch--delivers more concept that content. The performances throughout are sure-footed and the pieces are well-paced. With their debut, this young company has hit the ground running. --Justin Hayford
