The world of Ginza bars and the women who work in them is sensitively portrayed in Mikio Naruse's 1951 film. A bar hostess who's no longer young and is raising the son she had from a failed affair is trapped in her job, even borrowing money to help her boss. In the longest episode she takes a young man from the country on a tour of Tokyo, fantasizing about marriage only to see him fall in love with someone else. She returns to work, and the beautiful ending charges the imagery of a restored order with ineffable sadness. In Japanese with subtitles. 87 min.
