Girl Most Likely

A failed playwright (Kristen Wiig) loses her New York job and apartment and returns to her native Atlantic City to live with her zany mother (Annette Bening), her oddball brother (Christopher Fitzgerald), the young hunk who's renting her childhood room (Darren Criss), and mom's retired-CIA boyfriend (Matt Dillon). There’s a long tradition of eccentric-family comedies, from You Can't Take It With You to Little Miss Sunshine, but this one seems a little determined in its quirkiness, assigning its characters one gag apiece (the mother gambles, the boyfriend alludes to his dark past, the brother is obsessed with crabs). Bening and Dillon struggle with their underwritten parts, though Wiig is reliably funny as the sort of woman-on-the-verge she played in Bridesmaids. Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor ) directed a script by actress Michelle Morgan, who has a supporting role as the heroine’s New York frenemy.
