A high school student living in a Brooklyn housing project begins training as a boxer and soon competes against other featherweights, female and male. A family history of violence and a difficult romance test her ideas about relationships between women and men, ideas that are played out in the gym and in the ring by characters who definitely understand that their actions have metaphorical content. Writer-director Karyn Kusama emphasizes the development of the young woman's boxing skills as much as her emotional growth, building on classic elements found in dramas about male athletes to create a persuasively feminine coming-of-age story. With Michelle Rodriguez, Jaime Tirelli, Santiago Douglas, Ray Santiago, and Paul Calderon. 122 min. Evanston, Ford City, Lake, Landmark's Century Centre, 600 N. Michigan.
