Girls Vs. Boys Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 2 2009

Slated for a full professional production with the House Theatre of Chicago next spring, this new rock musical--developed through the American Music Theatre Project at Northwestern University, and presented here with an all-student cast--takes a look at young romance that is alternately sour and sweet. Featuring a book and lyrics by Chris Matthews, Jake Minton, and Nathan Allen and a score by Kevin O'Donnell and Allen, the show in its current incarnation doesn't hit as hard as the press materials suggest. A "modern-day Lord of the Flies" it isn't. But with an emphasis on issues such as self-cutting, it's not High School Musical, either. The story needs shaping: right now, the heroine, freshman girl Sam, doesn't shine until the second act. Still, there are some startlingly beautiful songs and moments of emotional honesty that deftly capture the roiling uncertainties and passions of kids trying to act grown-up. --Kerry Reid
