Give Me Your Hand

Focusing on a tiny nightclub in Jersey City, Dutch director Heddy Honigmann explores the vibrant spirit of the New York area's Cuban expat community. Declarations of longing for homeland and distant kin and laments about the all-consuming capitalism of America are interspersed with passionate surrenders to the rumba, the traditional voice-and-percussion dance music that lies at the heart of most Cuban song. Interviewees describe how a sense of cultural identity helps them cope, a point driven home by extended scenes of dancing and musical performance. 120 min.
