Go Tigers!

Director Kenneth Carlson may be a little too close to the subject of this documentary—a town's obsession with its high school football team. He grew up in Massillon, Ohio, and his movie, shot there in 1999, takes too long to get its themes and characters out on the field. The continued funding of the school district's programs requires a tax levy whose passage seems contingent on the Massillon Tigers' success, and the sports-versus-academics debate among teachers, coaches, parents, players, and fans reveals a tiny football-centric universe that may be unique in—and not unrepresentative of—America. Some sensationalized player bios (Carlson was once a producer for America's Most Wanted) and cheap Roger & Me shtick get things off to a slow start. 103 min.
