Goatwhore, Black Breath, Ringworm, Theories, Sons of Famine 17+ Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard Recommended Image

When: Sat., June 27, 7 p.m. 2015

Though catchiness isn’t really common in the subgenre of blackened-sludge death metal, these Louisiana bayou grinders actually gave me an earworm with the cultish chant “FBS” (an acronym for “Fucked by Satan”) on last year’s Constricting Rage of the Merciless (Metal Blade). It’s not quite as bad as, say, “Uncle Fukka” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut or that Internet virus “Papa Smurf, can I lick your ass?,” but it’s just as socially unacceptable—and I suppose for that I thank them. This, their sixth full-length, is a follow-up to 2012’s Blood for the Master, and by this point I think you know what you’re going to get with a Goatwhore record. The healthy strain of punk influence hasn’t faded as it has with some of their peers, so the rubbery, heavy murk occasionally gets a caffeinated jolt and begins galloping along along like a monster that shouldn’t be able to move at such a frightening speed, and piercing solos keep the tension high alongside the strangled, gurgling growl of the vocals. —Monica Kendrick
