God Doesn't Believe in Us Anymore

The first part of Austrian filmmaker Alex Corti's “Where To and Back?” trilogy, based on an autobiographical screenplay by Georg Stefan Troller, focuses on an orphaned Jewish teenager (Johannes Silberschneider) who leaves Vienna in 1938 for Czechoslovakia and France; his story is intercut with that of a former German army officer (Armin Mueller-Stahl) who works against the Nazis and is sent to Dachau (1981).
