The road movie is a favored genre among Iranian filmmakers, and this fitfully engaging debut feature by Iraj Karimi follows the passengers in four different cars as they head north from Tehran to the Caspian Sea. Angst is the prevalent mood among these mostly well-off urbanites, whose existential ramblings and faintly Western sentiments are punctuated by shots of the winding road. The car that commands the most screen time carries a widow and her late husband's mistress, who squabble over his memory but eventually strike up a grudging friendship. Karimi contrives several chance meetings between the various groups, but by the time all four cars end up at a roadside diner the film is running on empty. 86 min.
