Golden Boy Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 6 2014

Clifford Odets's 1937 drama centers on a credulity-straining career dilemma. Young Joe Bonaparte, apparently talented at both boxing and the violin, is forced to pick a passion to pursue. Why not throw insurance underwriting in the mix and make things interesting? But Odets is on a tear about artistic integrity, and this Griffin Theatre staging is happy to indulge his moralizing. Though director Jonathan Berry succeeds in capturing Odets's ear for the vernacular and colorful sense of place, his actors' frequently flat performances have all the personality of stock art. Patrick Blashill, playing Joe's father, is one key exception—his struggles feel real, while the rest seem like problems from a thought experiment. —Keith Griffith
