Golden Swallow

Cheng Pei-pei, a fixture of Chinese swordplay films, returns to the role that made her famous in 1966's Come Drink With Me: a feisty cross-dressing noblewoman known as Golden Swallow for her graceful, airborne fighting style. In this hyperventilating 1968 revenge ballad from Cheh Chang, she's allied with a warrior in black who has the hots for her, though she has eyes only for her childhood chum, Silver Roc (Jimmy Wang Tu, clad throughout in white), a ruthless punk who seems to get off on mass murder and then tries to frame Golden Swallow for his atrocities just to get her attention. Silver Roc's spectacularly warped morality and the dazzling fight scenes almost compensate for the emptiness of the gory spectacle. In Mandarin with subtitles. 108 min.
