The received notion that kids want their movies fast and furious is barely in evidence in this 1997 comedy, a laboriously slow suburban adventure in which a teenager's summer of leisure slips through his fingers when he has to get a job—an experience that proves almost life threatening because of the cutthroat competition between two burger joints. New recruit Kenan Thompson and employee of the month Kel Mitchell (whose character derives from a Nickelodeon sketch) play off each other well as they take turns being the straight man, but their efforts are diminished by the self-immolation of Abe Vigoda and other actors in pathetic exploitation roles, including writer Dan Schneider as a fast-food manager whose only significant trait is his weight. Directed by Brian Robbins.
