Goodbye, Life

Living up to its grim title, this drama set during the Iran-Iraq war follows the harrowing odyssey of a young female photojournalist (Ladan Mostofi) who's injured on the front lines and tries to make her way home to Tehran. The young woman stumbles through a war-ravaged purgatory but finds temporary solace with a mother and son en route to their ancestral village. Writer-director Ensieh Shah-Hosseini uses the war as cover for some pointed criticism of the social inequities faced by Iranian women; this paean to their resilience is admirable but also wearying in its unremitting bleakness. In Farsi with subtitles. 93 min.
