Goodnight Moon: The Musical The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 31 2011

Set designers Jacqueline and Richard Penrod have turned the "great green room" of Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd's bedtime classic into a semi-sentient cabinet of wonders. A bookshelf springs to life, paintings dance, a bedside lamp refuses to go out. The animation of inanimate objects feels entirely appropriate for a story about saying good night to a bedroom. Trouble is, adapter Chad Henry has time to fill. So he gives the bunny protagonist an endless string of techniques for avoiding sleep—songs, stories, glasses of water. Instead of a sweet bedtime ritual, this Chicago Children's Theatre premiere turns into a case study in ADHD. The book I kept thinking of wasn't Goodnight Moon but Go the Fuck to Sleep. —Zac Thompson
