Graceland Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 16 2009

Over the past few years the folks at Profiles Theatre have become so skilled at crafting tightly-focused domestic dramas that they can even turn Ellen Fairey's insubstantial new play into an engaging evening. The doggedly uneventful plot focuses on thirtysomething Sara, processing her estranged father's sudden death by groping her way through unhealthy flings with aging ladies' man Joe and his teenage son Miles. Meanwhile, her dead-end brother Sam wallows in his dead end. Though Fairey creates only middling stakes and very few shades of gray, director Matthew Miller's pitch-perfect cast find myriad nuances. As Sara, Brenda Barrie continues her streak of carefully etched performances. But it's baby-faced Jackson Challinor's razor-sharp timing as the bumbling, precocious Miles that steals the show. --Justin Hayford
