Great Expectations | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Great Expectations Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 13 2014

It's hard to believe that Great Expectations—or any other Charles Dickens novel—can be staged effectively in a small space with a small cast. Dickens's narratives sprawl across decades and geographies, full of incident and people. Many, many people. Yet Strawdog Theatre has done it with an adaptation by Gale Childs Daly and a half-dozen engaging actors working under the direction of Jason Gerace. Great Expectations is the one about Pip, an orphan boy subjected to some strange tortures and even stranger kindnesses on his way to becoming a man. Daly's script combines chamber-theater-style readings with conventional drama to produce a show that, in about two and a half hours, embodies not only the gist of Pip's tale but its harrowing, eccentric, immensely generous spirit. —Tony Adler
